Peace and order returned to the Christmas workshop the next day. The elves had recovered and were hard at work once more, making new gifts and singing along to Christmas songs. Annie had popped by to check up on everyone, and was lending a hand by inspecting the junior doctor kits. Nick was ticking presents off his list and starting to feel calmer. The sleigh now looked exactly as it should do again and – best of all – Granny was quietly working on some new invention or other, and not causing any problems.

Phew! Nick thought. They were still on track to make it a great Christmas. It was all going to be absolutely fine.

But just then he heard a clanking noise from outside. Then a strange sort of whirring. And then came the sound of Granny’s excited voice calling, ‘Cooee! Where are you all? Who wants a snowball fight? Catch me if you can!’

There was a soft FLUMP of snow at the workshop window. Harry peered outside and burst out laughing. ‘Oh my goodness,’ he chuckled. ‘This is amazing! Come and see what she’s built now!’

The elves wasted no time in following him out into the snow, where a very unusual sight met their eyes. Granny was strapped into a robot that had four long metal legs and seven arms, each with giant scoops for hands at the end. The robot was running around, shaping handfuls of snow into snowballs and throwing them.
